About the Symposium:

The 18th Annual Statewide WV Sexual Assault and Stalking Symposium is scheduled for Wednesday, April 11, 2018 at the Stonewall Resort in Roanoke, WV. This one day symposium provides a multidisciplinary training opportunity to learn about emerging practices in sexual assault cases.

 

FRIS is pleased to offer 18 workshops this year on various topics including, gender bias, working with LGBTQ victims, preserving digital evidence, and updates on the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative (SAKI) Project, just to name a few!!

 

Who Should Attend:

The symposium is essential for law enforcement, campus security, victim advocates, SANEs, medical personnel, prosecutors, SART members, college campus staff, social workers, counselors, disability service providers and corrections staff.

Lodging

Lodging is available at Stonewall Resort. Reservations must be made by March 1, 2018 to receive the discounted rate. Discounted rate is $93.00 per night with a $15.00 Resort Fee + $2.00 Parking Fee +$5.58 Occupancy Tax.

Scholarships:

Limited lodging, travel and/or per diem scholarships are available to rape crisis center advocates/prevention education specialists and law enforcement officers. Lodging and per diem scholarship applications must be received by February 27, 2018. You will receive a decision one week following the deadline. Scholarship requests can be made during the registration process in Eventbrite.

 

Note: Agencies that currently receive VAWA and/or VOCA sexual assault training funding will be required to use those in lieu of scholarship funding per DJCS requirements.

 

 

Featured Speakers:

  • Tom Tremblay a national leader in the development and delivery of Trauma-Informed Sexual Assault Investigations Training. He serves as an Independent Monitor/Reviewer for Department of Justice Agreements with law enforcement agencies designed to improve sexual assault and domestic violence response and investigations following reports of unlawful gender discrimination. Tom also assists the Department of Justice in promoting gender bias prevention strategies for law enforcement when responding to domestic and sexual violence crimes.
  • Jane Anderson, JD is an Attorney Advisor with AEquitas: The Prosecutors' Resource on Violence Against Women. As an Attorney Advisor, Jane presents on trial strategy, legal analysis and policy, and ethics. She provides technical assistance and case consultation for prosecutors and allied professionals; authors and develops resources, publications, and curricula; and consults on the development of protocols and policies that improve responses to crimes of violence against women.
  • Michael Munson is the co-founder and Executive Director of FORGE, an organization focused on improving the lives of transgender individuals by building stronger connections, providing resources, and empowering growth through knowledge. His educational background is in psychology, with an emphasis in trauma. munson’s work on violence against transgender and gender non-conforming individuals is groundbreaking, stressing the intersectionality between complex components of identity, experience, and societal constructs that both spur violence, as well as catalyze healing for individuals and communities.

DJCS approves this training as credit toward the required 8 hour minimum training under VOCA/VAWA. A Certificate of Attendance must be submitted to DJCS to receive credit for the training. Programs that will be requesting reimbursement for this training must submit a request for approval and breakdown of allowable cost to DJCS prior to attending the training. Failure to obtain preapproval may result in the cost not being reimbursed by DJCS. VOCA/VAWA grantees should contact the program manager for approval.
